What Paul is really talking about is living with integrity. He is talking about waking up to what really fills our spirits and then focusing on those things. All of those things that our culture tells us will fill us up – wealth, possessions, power, fame, beauty, having every whim and desire satisfied – actually leave us empty, and so we get caught in an endless search for fulfillment. It’s like only eating candy – you get a sugar high for a while, but after the high wears off you’re not only still hungry, now you’re also shaky and depressed. God created us, and only God can fill us up and give us the eternal lives he intends for us to have. And the wonderful thing is that God has made it easy for us to be filled by him. He gave us Jesus Christ, the bread of life. To be filled by God we need only feast on Jesus Christ – we need only be faithful disciples, disciples attempting to live lives of love, disciples allowing the Holy Spirit to work in and through us.
