Sermon excerpt from the Church Retreat at Camp Wightman on 09/27/2015:
Jesus spoke to those in his time who followed him. But he didn’t just speak to them. He has spoken throughout the ages to all who would listen and he speaks to us now. Hear the invitation he extends to you today and every day: “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt 11:28-30). Jesus invites you in this moment – and in every moment – to come to him. Let go of the heavy burden of your agenda and put on the light burden of Jesus’ agenda. As Henri Nouwen says, “Give every part of your heart and your time to God and let God tell you what to do, where to go, when and how to respond. God does not want you to destroy yourself. Exhaustion, burnout, and depression are not signs that you are doing God’s will. God is gentle and loving. God desires to give you a deep sense of safety in God’s love.”[1]
