The Ten Commandments are worded negatively, with a lot of “you shall nots,” but they are, in essence, positive: “You shall not do so and so, so that you shall have a good life, a life grounded in God.” Perhaps that is why Jesus, when he was asked to pronounce the greatest and the second greatest commandments, stated them positively, saying, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:30-31). Love God, love self, and love neighbor. Do these things, and you will be grounded in God.
